About Pax Transhumanity

Pax Transhumanity is a heavy strategy card game for 1–4 players set in a non-dystopian future where players compete as startup entrepreneurs — funding ideas, solving global problems, and guiding humanity toward their vision of tomorrow.

Pax Transhumanity is a richly layered and intellectually stimulating strategy card game designed by Matt Eklund and published by Ion Game Design and Sierra Madre Games. Released in September 2019, it stands as the only entry in the celebrated Pax series to trade historical settings for a speculative, science-fiction future — one that is refreshingly optimistic. Rather than painting a picture of apocalypse, pandemic, or collapse, Pax Transhumanity invites players to imagine what humanity could achieve through science, innovation, and the bold expansion of ideas across four key spheres: the Developing World, the Cloud, Space, and Society. Players take on the roles of startup entrepreneurs — a Doctor, a Colonel, a Blogger, or a Citizen — each with unique starting patents and hidden goals. The objective is to invest in idea cards drawn from a shared market, syndicate and commercialize those ideas to solve real humanitarian problems, build companies, and ultimately shape the Human Progress Splay in a way that ensures your vision becomes the dominant regime by game's end. What makes Pax Transhumanity exceptional is its brilliant elimination of physical money in favour of a cube-based finance board where agents shift fluidly between Capital, Wealth, and Debt states. Every action — fundraising, research, syndication, commercialization — carries strategic weight and consequence. The game rewards careful planning, ruthless opportunism, and deep familiarity with the ever-changing card market. With a gameplay time of 60 to 150 minutes, support for 1 to 4 players, and a compact box size of just 5 x 5 x 2 inches, Pax Transhumanity is a masterclass in delivering a heavyweight gaming experience in a remarkably small package. It earned a 5-star review from Board Game Quest, was named a finalist for The Golden Elephant Award, and holds a BGG average rating of 7.47 with a complexity weight of 4.41 out of 5 — firmly establishing it as one of the most rewarding and ambitious strategy board games of 2019.

How to Play & Earn

1

Set Up the Game

Each player is randomly assigned one of four player colors (Doctor, Colonel, Citizen, or Blogger). Distribute a Finance Board, 9 agent cubes, and a starting patent to each player. Set up the four Sphere boards, arrange the Idea Market conveyor with the correct number of cards for your player count, and prepare the Human Progress Splay and Regime cards.

  • In a 2-player game, use only Blogger Blue and Doctor — Colonel Black and Citizen Pink are removed from play
  • Place 8 of your 9 agents across Capital, Wealth, and Debt on your Finance Board at the start
  • Read your hidden role goal card carefully before your first turn — it can significantly influence your early strategy
2

Understand the Finance Board

Your Finance Board is your only source of currency in Pax Transhumanity. Agent cubes in Capital are most powerful, Wealth is functional, and Debt is costly to escape. Fundraising moves cubes downward to generate the money needed for actions. Commercializing ideas and building companies moves cubes back upward. Managing your financial state is the single most important skill in the game.

  • Never let all your cubes fall to Debt — recovering is expensive and time-consuming
  • Fundraising early and often is the most common and crucial action in the game
  • Watch your opponents' Finance Boards — players running low on Capital may be unable to block your key moves
3

Interact with the Idea Market

On your turn you take two actions. The most common actions involve the Idea Market — you can Syndicate a card (apply its special rules to yourself), place a card in your Think Tank for later use, or Commercialize a card to score its benefits and add it to the Human Progress Splay. Each action costs agent cubes based on the card's column position and the Barriers present in its Sphere.

  • Syndicated cards give you ongoing special abilities — look for cards that combo with your intended strategy
  • Commercializing a card shifts it into the Human Progress Splay and changes the active Regime — time this carefully
  • Only 38 of the full card pool appear in any game, so adapt your strategy to what the market offers
4

Manage Sphere Boards and Remove Barriers

Each of the four Sphere boards has infrastructure tiers where you can place agent Employees to perform Maker or Thinker work. Red octagonal Barriers on each Sphere increase the cost of actions in that domain. Strategically removing Barriers reduces costs for yourself and all players, while installing Companies in Sphere slots can score victory points at game end depending on the active Regime.

  • Removing Barriers early in a Sphere you plan to commercialize heavily will save significant resources over the game
  • Companies installed in Sphere slots can be worth VP at game end — check the active Regime to see which Spheres are scoring
  • Employees placed in Sphere infrastructure generate Maker or Thinker work — essential for researching and commercializing ideas
5

Shape the Human Progress Splay and the Regime

Every card that is commercialized enters the Human Progress Splay. The bottom three cards of the Splay form the Cutting Edge, which determines the active Regime. The Regime governs which types of achievements score victory points at game end — companies, solved problems, or specific discipline combinations. Influencing the Splay to favor your strengths while disrupting opponents is one of the deepest strategic layers in Pax Transhumanity.

  • Commercializing cards strategically can shift the Cutting Edge and the Regime to favor your scoring position
  • Keep track of the current Regime at all times — it determines what will score when the game ends
  • Opponents will also try to shift the Regime in their favor — anticipate these moves and respond with your own commercialization timing
6

Pursue Your Victory Path and Win

Victory in Pax Transhumanity can be achieved through multiple paths: accumulating solved humanitarian problem chits (scored based on the Regime), building the most companies for a Tycoon Victory, or triggering a Paradigm Shift or Singularity end condition. Your hidden role goal may also award bonus points. The player whose combination of solved problems, companies, and role goals scores highest under the final Regime wins.

  • Identify your primary victory path early — problem-solving or company-building — and focus your resources accordingly
  • Your hidden role goal can be a significant source of bonus points — do not neglect it even while pursuing the main strategy
  • Monitor opponents closely — a player close to triggering a Tycoon Victory or Singularity end condition can end the game before you are ready

What is Pax Transhumanity?

Pax Transhumanity is a heavy strategy card game for 1 to 4 players designed by Matt Eklund and published by Ion Game Design and Sierra Madre Games in 2019. It is part of the acclaimed Pax series of card games, and uniquely stands as the only title in the series to explore a speculative future rather than a historical setting. Players take on the roles of visionary startup entrepreneurs competing to fund ideas, commercialize innovations, solve humanitarian problems, and build companies — all in pursuit of shaping the future of humanity according to their own strategic vision. The game is played using a shared market of idea cards across four spheres of human progress: the Developing World, the Cloud, Space, and Society.

A Non-Dystopian Vision of the Future

At its thematic core, Pax Transhumanity presents a bold and optimistic vision of humanity's future — one without zombies, pandemics, or post-apocalyptic collapse. Instead, the game asks: what if scientists, technocrats, and free-market entrepreneurs rewrote the human condition by demolishing the barriers of age, disease, suffering, and physical limitation? Players are cast as the architects of this future, guiding humanity's progress across the Developing World, the Cloud, and Space, solving real societal and technological problems along the way. This refreshing and thought-provoking theme sets Pax Transhumanity apart from virtually every other science-fiction board game on the market.

The Idea Market — Heart of the Gameplay

Central to every game of Pax Transhumanity is the Idea Market — a conveyor-style shared marketplace of cards that players compete to access. Unlike traditional card games, no player owns a hand of cards or maintains a personal tableau. Instead, cards in the market can be syndicated, placed in a player's Think Tank, or commercialized to enter the Human Progress Splay. Each idea card carries a color pair, thematic flavor, and the potential to solve humanitarian problems or create new companies. Only 38 of the full card pool appear in any given game, ensuring that every session offers a unique and unpredictable strategic landscape.

The Finance Board — A Revolutionary Currency System

One of the most celebrated design innovations in Pax Transhumanity is its complete elimination of physical money. Instead of coins or tokens, the game uses a cube-based Finance Board where each player's agents move between three financial states: Capital (the most powerful), Wealth, and Debt. Fundraising moves cubes downward to generate income; commercializing ideas and building companies moves cubes upward. This elegant system — widely credited as an inspiration for the Riverfolk mechanics in the acclaimed game Root — gives every financial decision genuine weight and creates a dynamic tension between spending now and preserving future capacity.

Four Sphere Boards and the Human Progress Splay

Pax Transhumanity features four Sphere boards — each tied to a key area of human development: the Developing World, the Cloud, Society, and Space. Each sphere has an associated infrastructure with three tiers of agent placement. Agents installed here function as Employees, performing Maker or Thinker work to advance ideas within that sphere. Red octagonal Barriers scattered across each sphere increase the cost of commercializing and researching within that domain, creating strategic bottlenecks that players must manage. When a card is commercialized, it enters the Human Progress Splay — a shared stack whose bottom three cards, known as the Cutting Edge, determine the active Regime and define what scores points at game end.

Player Roles and Starting Advantages

Each player in Pax Transhumanity takes on one of four distinct roles: the Doctor, the Colonel, the Citizen, and the Blogger. Each role comes with a unique starting patent in a specific scientific discipline, a different fundraising advantage, and a hidden personal goal that may award bonus points at game end. These asymmetric starting positions create diverse strategic pathways from the very first turn, encouraging players to lean into their role's strengths while adapting to the ever-shifting opportunities presented by the shared market. Understanding your role's edge — and how to exploit it — is key to competing for victory.

Shifting Victory Conditions and the Regime System

Unlike most strategy games with fixed victory conditions, Pax Transhumanity features a dynamic end-game scoring system governed by the active Regime. The Regime is determined by the three most recently commercialized cards in the Human Progress Splay, called the Cutting Edge. As the splay evolves throughout the game, the scoring priorities shift — rewarding different combinations of companies, solved problems, and disciplines. This means that a player's strategic targets may change mid-game as opponents commercialize new ideas and alter the Cutting Edge. Victory can be achieved through multiple pathways including a Tycoon Victory (building companies), solving humanitarian problems, or triggering a Paradigm Shift or Singularity end condition.

Solo and Multiplayer Modes

Pax Transhumanity supports 1 to 4 players and includes both competitive multiplayer and solo play modes. The solo mode allows a single player to practice syndication and commercialization strategies before competing against others — an invaluable tool given the game's steep initial learning curve. A short game variant is also available for 2 to 3 players, reducing the session length significantly and making the game more accessible for groups with limited time. Whether played solo, head-to-head, or with a full group of four, Pax Transhumanity scales well and delivers a satisfying challenge at every player count.

Card Artwork and Production Quality

The cards in Pax Transhumanity feature striking and imaginative artwork by Johanna Pettersson and Karim Chakroun. Each idea card presents thematic artwork that visually captures the innovation or concept it represents — from Machine Ethics and P2P Foundational Economics to Statistical Logic Boards and beyond. The flavor text accompanying each card enriches the game's narrative and lends a sense of genuine intellectual adventure to every session. The game is delivered in a compact 5 x 5 x 2-inch box weighing just 1.1 pounds, making it highly portable and an outstanding example of maximum game density in minimal physical space.

Awards, Recognition, and Critical Reception

Pax Transhumanity has received widespread critical acclaim since its 2019 release.
